American Checkers

Standard 8×8 straight checkers for two players side-by-side or solo against the computer. Captures are mandatory, chain jumps continue with the same piece, and crowning on the far row ends the turn.

American Checkers Rules & Controls

Same-Device 2-Player & Solo Play: By default, two players beside each other alternate turns on the same screen (Player 1 plays Cream moving upward; Player 2 plays Amber moving downward). Use Flip Board or enable Auto-flip (2P) to rotate the board between turns, or switch Mode to play against the built-in computer opponent.

Movement & Kings: Pieces always move diagonally on the 32 dark teal squares. Uncrowned men step or jump forward only. Reaching the farthest row crowns a piece as a King (marked with a golden crown), allowing it to step and jump diagonally both forward and backward.

Mandatory Captures & Chain Jumps: If a jump capture is available anywhere on the board, you must capture—regular non-capture steps are disabled. If the jumping piece lands on a square with another capture available, it must continue jumping in the same turn until no further jumps remain.

Promotion Stops the Move (American Rule): When an uncrowned piece reaches the far king row (whether by simple step or jump), it is crowned immediately and its move ends on that square, even if a backward jump would otherwise be open.

Winning, Draws & Keyboard: Win by capturing all opponent pieces or blocking every legal move. A draw occurs on threefold repetition or 40 full moves (80 plies) without a capture or man movement. Use touch/click or arrow keys + Enter/Space to select and move pieces (Esc to deselect, U to undo, F to flip, N for new game).
